Uchikawa Art Club
I lead art activities for the students of Uchikawa Elementary and Junior High School in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, and for the residents of the Uchikawa district.
Local resources — the surrounding nature and materials — are taken up as themes, and participants spend about 1.5 to 3 hours working on a piece.
Sometimes we combine each person's drawings into a single large work; at other times each participant works one-on-one with a more involved task.
I set only a broad theme and don't constrain how each person expresses it, supporting them as they take whatever idea they freely come up with and shape it into form. The discoveries, the moments of hesitation, the sense of accomplishment that arise along the way — I value all of these as part of the experience.
Once a year, the works are shown at a local cultural festival or similar event — a time I value as an opportunity to share the joy of expression within the community.
A few times a year, we also hold occasional grade-specific workshops, including ones drawing on past projects and flyers.
